Senegal set to scoop Caf awards
Senegal's El Hadji Diouf, African Footballer of the Year
Diouf is favourite to retain the title he won in 2001
Senegal look ready for a near clean sweep of this year's African football awards after picking up eight nominations.

Two of them were already known; El Hadji Diouf and Pape Bouba Diop were entered for the most prestigious award, the African Footballer of Year, on 31 December.

But Senegal are well represented in the other categories which were released by Caf on Wednesday.

List of nominees for the annual African soccer awards:

  • Footballer of the Year: El Hadji (Liverpool/Senegal), Pape Bouba Diop (Lens/Senegal), Ahmed Hossam (Ajax/Egypt)
  • Young Player of the Year: Ahmed Hossam (Ajax/Egypt), Steven Pienaar (Ajax/South Africa), Kolo Toure (Arsenal/Ivory Coast)
  • Goalkeeper of the Year: Essam Al Hadari (Egypt), Alioum Boukar (Cameroon), Tony Sylva (Senegal)
  • Coach of the Year: Luis Oscar Fullone (Wydad Casablanca), Bruno Metsu (Senegal), Idrissa Traore (Asec Abidjan)
  • Club of the Year: JS Kabylie (Algeria), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Zamalek (Egypt)
  • Team of the Year: Cameroon, Senegal, Nigeria (women)
  • African Champions League Best Player: Walid Abdellatif (Zamalek), Hicham Aboucherouane (Raja Casablanca), Abdoulaye Djire (ASEC Abidjan)
  • Best (televised) Goal: Abdelhalim Ali (Egypt v Costa do Sol), Abdelouahed Abdessamad (Raja Casablanca v Jeanne d'Arc), Henri Camara (Senegal v Sweden), Pape Bouba Diop (Senegal v Uruguay), Mfanzile Dlamini (Swaziland v Namibia)
  • Women's Footballer of the Year: Alberta Sackey (Ghana)
  • Youth Development Award: Ghana Football Association
  • Merit Achievement Award: Mwade Wade (Senegal)

The World Cup quarter-finalists are overwhelming favourites to repeat their wins of 2001 in the Coach of the Year and Team of the Year award.

Bruno Metsu, who won the trophy last year, is now with Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates after leaving in acrimonious circumstances.

Two of Senegal's World Cup goals have been nominated for the Best Goal award, which has five candidates this time round, and goalkeeper Tony Sylva is also nominated.

There will also be a special award for former Senegal coach and administrator Mawade Wade in recognition of his work with Caf over the last four decades.

Ghana's Albert Sackey was on Wednesday named as Africa's Women's Footballer of the Year and Zamalek of Egypt, who won the Africa Champions League title in December, are represented in two categories.

The awards will be handed out on 1 April at a banquet in Johannesburg, which looks sure to be an evening of celebration for Senegal.
