Diouf on Euro shortlist
Diouf is already African footballer of the year
El Hadji Diouf could be European player of the year
Senegal pair El Hadji Diouf and Pape Bouba Diop are the only African players on the shorlist for the European Footballer of the Year award.

The two stars hope to follow the footsteps of Liberia's George Weah, the only African recipient of the award.

Weah won the European, African and World Player of the Year titles in 1995.

Diouf and Diop's nomination are linked to their superb performance with Senegal.

The Lions of Teranga reached the final of the African Nations Cup and the quarter-final of the World Cup.

Diouf and Diop also hope to follow in the footsteps of Michael Owen, the current European Footballer of the Year, when the winner is announced on 17 December.

Diouf is the current African footballer of the year.

Three other nominees have African connections.

Arsenal's Patrick Vieira is originally from Senegal, and Vieira's French team-mate, Claude Makelele, was born in DR Congo.

Reigning World Footballer of the Year, Zinedine Zidane, is of Algerian origin, although French-born.

Zidane is expected to be one of the strongest contenders for this year's European award, along with Real Madrid team-mate, Brazilian superstar Ronaldo.

The award, given by France Football magazine, honours the best footballer playing in Europe over the past year.
