Folkestone Invicta win promotion

Folkestone Invicta have won the Ryman South play-offs to gain promotion.

Invicta were leading the table for most of the season until they entered a company voluntary agreement and were docked 10 points in February.

But they recovered to beat Godalming Town 2-1 in the play-off final to go up to the Ryman Premier Division.

Folkestone manager Neil Cugley told BBC Radio Kent: "I say time and time again how do they keep doing it and they've been brilliant."

Josh Vincent gave Folkestone the lead on 19 minutes only for his side to concede two minutes later.

But Simon Austin scored the decisive goal on midway through the first half minutes to see Folkestone home.

Vincent said: "It was a great ball in, and all I had to do was guide it past the corner. It was one of those days."

"That was one of the worst 15 minutes I've ever had," added Vincent about the closing stages of the game.

Folkestone's nerves were tested when the referee gave Godalming a late penalty only for his decision to be over-ruled by the assistant referee.

Folkestone's Josh Burchall said as the penalty was awarded he was already thinking of a very different end to the game.

"I was thinking penalties, extra time, I was worried, but great decision by the linesman not to give it," he said.

Folkestone join fellow Kent clubs Tonbridge Angels, Maidstone United and Cray Wanderers in Ryman Premier next season.

Margate could stay with them if they get a reprieve from relegation after finishing fourth-from-bottom.
