Gillingham's League One survival hopes rest in their own hands thanks to victory against Southampton.
Rene Howe broke the deadlock when he slotted into an open goal from 10 yards after Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis's clearance cannoned off Simeon Jackson.
Josh Gowling doubled the lead, heading home Curtis Weston's cross.
Southampton reduced the deficit through David Connolly's 20-yard strike, with top scorer Rickie Lambert, a half-time substitute, also going close.
The win leaves Gillingham two points clear of Tranmere, who occupy the final relegation place, and Exeter.
The Gills have a far superior goal difference to the Wirral club so a point at Wycombe, who were relegated after losing at Leyton Orient, will be enough to ensure their survival barring a highly improbable result for Rovers at Stockport.
Gillingham are still the only club in the country apart from Hull without a league away win to their name this season.
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson told BBC Radio Kent:
"To come away with three points was the most important thing."
"There'll be people saying we could have been safe if Tranmere hadn't won but if we had been beaten we would have been in a tricky position."
"But we are one point from safety and I'm sure we'll take a tremendous following to Wycombe. I can assure them we'll be going for the win to get the points we require to stay in this division.
Southampton manager Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent:
"We have to hold our hands up and say they were more prepared than us today, were up for the occasion and deserved their win.
"I did make some changes because obviously my focus as well is on next year. I've got to see if one or two players are going to contribute to next year.
"I guarantee to Southampton fans that we will play our strongest team next week. It's our last home game we deserve to put our best players on the pitch."
