Gulls leave Guernsey pitch in tatters

Guernsey's Blanche Pierre Lane has been left out of action for the foreseeable future after the playing surface was damaged by birds.

The turf at St Martins AC's ground has been been pulled up by seagulls digging for worms.

Large areas may have to be re-turfed or re-seeded while all games scheduled there are being played elsewhere.

The club have placed mannequins, that are usually used for training, on the ground to act as scarecrows.

St Martins president Henry Davey told BBC Channel Islands: "It just seems that the water table is so high, the worms are near the top, the seagulls know this, they paddle their feet up and down and the worms come up and they just pick them up.

"Unfortunately because there's a lot of grass they pull the grass up as well."

Guernsey Football Association League Secretary Garry Cortez added: "I will try to help to give the pitch some time to recover but they may have to re-turf some large areas - weather permitting."
