The name Muratti Vase, given to the annual football clash between Guernsey and Jersey, may be under threat.
Media reports have suggested that the name may have to change because of legislation set to ban sporting sponsorship by cigarette companies.
Muratti is also the name of a cigarette brand which originally sponsored the fixture.
Anti-smoking campaigner Alun Williams told BBC Guernsey there was no need for the change: "It's part of our history."
Williams, who is chairman of the Guernsey Adolescent Smokefree Project, has campaigned for the law to be updated but feels this would be a step too far.
"There's no way that the legislation is going to allow for that change," he said.
"It's a shame that's there's been this discussion as it detaches from a much more important issue of consulting over the way the tobacco companies present their products and protecting young people from those products."
Williams added: "It also gets hares running about concerns about the health police deciding we're going to have to change names - it's not the case."
