The two islands are taking different paths to improve their standards
Jersey Football Association's chief executive says the island should not follow Guernsey in having a side in an English league.
Paul Creedon says the cost and travel arrangements would make it ineffective.
It follows news that a Guernsey United team is to be formed with the aim of playing in the Kent Premier League from the start of next season.
"I think it'd be cost ineffective as it would cost over 200,000 a year," Creedon told BBC Radio Jersey.
People in Jersey want what we're moving towards. A national team is massively more important for us
JFA chief executive Paul Creedon
"It surprises me on financial and practical reasons.
"The team would have to play twice a week, Saturdays and midweek games and getting amateur players to have time off work midweek will be tough for Tuesday and Wednesday night matches," Creedon added.
He says that while any club in the island is welcome to play in another league, he does not think it would happen because of the cost implications.
He also says there is little appetite for an island team playing in an English amateur league.
"We've recently done a consultation process for our national game plan. During that period nobody mentioned a Jersey club side.
"Our league structure is fantastic. We had four or five teams fighting for the title which makes it a strong league."
He also fears that Guernsey island football will be poorer as a result of the move.
