Guernsey Utd aim for Kent League

Football

A new island club, Guernsey United, has been formed with the aim of joining the Kent League Premier Division next year.

Current island managers Steve Ogier and Tony Vance will coach United, who could play in the FA Vase in 2009 and enter the FA Cup from 2010.

Former GFA chairman David Nussbaumer is one of the men behind the team.

Nussbaumer said: "The club has been created to encourage the island's young footballers to stretch their ability and their ambition to the full."

He added: "Giving these local lads regular football at semi-professional level will put them in the game's shop window and help propel some of them towards professional careers."

If the team join the Kent League Premier Division their opponents are likely to include teams such as Tunbridge Wells, Greenwich Borough and Sporting Bengal.
