GFA close to agreement on league

Could a compromise be reached over the new youth structure?

Guernsey Football Association is close to an agreement with clubs over plans for a new league for players aged between 16 and 23.

The proposed league would replace Youth One, which is the under-18's league, and allow players an easier route into senior football.

But some clubs want the ages for the league to be 16 to 21 years.

At a meeting on Monday night the GFA said they were close to an agreement, but would not reveal what it was.

PROPOSED GFA LEAGUE CHANGES
Abolish Priaulx, Jackson and Railway leagues
Abolish Youth One
Create a new league with at least two divisions and have promotion and relegation between them
Establish a 16-23 year-olds league
Restrict players to playing for one club
"All being well we should be in a position to announce an agreement on Saturday," GFA commercial director James Blower told BBC Guernsey.

"I don't think we're that far away from getting an agreement, everyone is happy with 95% of the plan."

Under the new plans the Priaulx, Jackson and Railway leagues would be abolished and replaced with a tiered league structure with promotion and relegation, similar to the first team structure of the Jersey Football Combination.

But under that system clubs such as Port City and the Police, who only play in the Railway League, fear they may be forced to pull out of GFA football and join the social leagues instead.

Many social league players also turn out for sides in the Jackson or Priaulx Leagues as well in the Railway League. Under the new plans they would be unable to play for more than one side as the new rules restrict a player to playing for just one club.

If the plans are agreed the new league structure should come in next season.
