Deary is a pupil at Truro School

Cornwall's William Deary has become the first ever British fencer to win on the European under-15 sabre circuit.

The 14-year-old from Truro Fencing Club took gold at the Moneteau international in France.

He said: "I had been training really hard at Truro Fencing Club and and whilst wanting to win I certainly didn't expect to.

"I was using the competition mainly for experience so I'm thrilled as it was such a great feeling to win."

Fellow Cornish youngsters Josh Maxwell and William Hosking were also competing at the event in France.
