Razzaq fires as Sri Lanka crumble
Second Test, Karachi (day one, stumps)
Sri Lanka 208 v Pakistan

A Razzaq
Razzaq had never before taken five wickets in a Test innings

Sri Lanka collapsed from 66-0 to 208 all out as Abdul Razzaq claimed his best bowling haul in Test matches to leave Pakistan on top in Karachi.

On day one of the second Test, Razzaq found some generous reverse swing as only one Sri Lankan, wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluwitharana, passed fifty.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria took 3-72 and debutant fast-medium pacer Riaz Afridi chipped in with 2-42.

Wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal, replacing Moin Khan, collected three catches.

Surprisingly electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Pakistan initially watched as Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu batted well.

Finally, Jayasuriya was trapped lbw for 26 in Kaneria's first over and three overs later Atapattu gave a slip catch to Younis Khan to fall for 44.

The home team's leading pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar was forced out of the match with a shoulder injury.

Riaz Afridi
Afridi's first victim in Test match cricket was Kumar Sangakkara

Without him or Mohammad Sami, and with a novice new-ball attack of Riaz and Naved-ul-Hasan, it made it especially peculiar that Inzamam-ul-Haq declined the chance to bat first.

The match was in the balance at lunch, however, and it swung firmly in the dierction of the home side after the interval.

Kumar Sangakkara became the first of four batsmen in succession to fall in the teens when he top-edged a pull off Riaz to give Kaneria a catch at fine leg.

The same bowler then removed Mahela Jayawardene and two smart catches behind square on the off-side gave Razzaq his first pair of wickets - Thilan Samaraweera and Jehan Mubarak both failing.

With the score 150-6 at tea, the stable door was coming off its hinges, and when Chaminda Vaas and Farveez Maharoof were both dislodged for single-figure scores Sri Lanka were in desperate straits.

Finally, Kaluwitharana (54) was joined in a partnership worth 44 for the ninth wicket with Rangana Herath (12).

But when Kaneria returned to have Kalu caught at the wicket, Herath edged the very next delivery to Akmal to give Razzaq, from the first ball of his 24th over, excellent figures of 5-35.
