| White and Cork back for Lord's ![]() White (right) admitted he had lost pace last year Craig White and Dominic Cork have been recalled as England look to replace injured duo Andrew Caddick and Alex Tudor for the first Test against India, which begins on Thursday. And John Crawley will take the spot of Marcus Trescothick, who fractured his thumb on Wednesday, with Mark Butcher set to open the batting with Michael Vaughan.
Cork played in the first Test at Lord's this summer, against Sri Lanka but missed the two subsequent matches. White admitted recently that he would re-evaluate his game at the end of the season, after a back injury last year cut down his pace. But the batting of both weighed in the favour with the loss of Tudor, who would have batted at number eight. "Obviously I am glad to be back, you sometimes think ... that maybe your time is up and you might not get another chance," said White. "I knew they needed a fifth bowler who could bat when Alex was injured so it looks like it's a case of me or Dominic Cork." Cork is the leading first-class wicket-taker in the country, the first to reach 50 for the season, but White's eight victims before the announcement have cost more than 46 apiece.
"Opening the batting means you can always get out early but I feel there is a big innings around the corner because I am moving my feet well," he said. "I also feel that my bowling is coming along well." The pair look likely to be fighting for a single spot as Darren Gough returns to the Test side, despite having yet to complete a first-class match this year. Glamorgan's Simon Jones receives a third call-up to the squad, with Graveney saying the young fast bowler would play should Gough prove unfit. Crawley selection consistent Butcher has also yet to prove his safe return from knee surgery, but is currently playing for Surrey against Kent. And the selectors are keen to preserve the combination of left- and right-handed opening batsmen.
"John Crawley came into the side for the first Test against Sri Lanka and acquitted himself well," said Graveney. "There is no reason why he should be overlooked now as we want to be consistent in our selection policy." Graveney said earlier this week that Warwickshire youngster Ian Bell "had not made a 50 of late" in the Championship, and pointed to the need for extra experience in the side. England squad: N Hussain (capt), MP Vaughan, MA Butcher, GP Thorpe, J P Crawley, AJ Stewart, A Flintoff, DG Cork, C White, AF Giles, D Gough, MJ Hoggard, SP Jones. |
