York Cricket Club have appointed former Yorkshire batsman Jim Love as their new club coach.

Love will be involved with every level from the Under-sevens to the first team who are the Yorkshire League Champions.

York's secretary Nick Kay told BBC Radio York that Love has the ability to take the club forward.

"He's a level three coach, he's got a decorated career in the county. He's just the sort of person we hope can take the club to the next level."

York have won the Yorkshire League for the last two years but Kay says Love's role will not be all about the first team.

"Obviously we've been very successful in the recent past but there are other areas of the club that still need to be developed. He's the man for the job.

It's got to be a good thing for the club. We're very excited

"The intention is that he develops cricket from the Under-sevens right through to senior cricket and first-team level.

Since leaving Yorkshire at the end of 1989 the 53-year-old continued playing in the minor counties before becoming Scotland's director of cricket.

"He said to me he was Yorkshire League born and bred when I met up with him the first time and I know his heart is always going to be in the county," Kay added.

"He played at Harrogate until 1991 before he went off to coach the Scottish national side, so he knows the game, he knows the teams, he knows the grounds.

"But its important to stress he's not just here for the first team's benefit, he's here for the club's benefit.

"There are still clubs in the country that are leagues ahead of us in terms of their coaching and infrastructure and we want to match them.

"We believe we've got the base and the nucleus of good young players within York and within the club and its time we gave them the best opportunity to progress to county level.

"It's got to be a good thing for the club. We're very excited."
