York have won the YPL title three times in five years |
York retained their Yorkshire Premier League title despite losing their final game to Sheffield United by 50 runs. Their triumph was confirmed when news filtered through that Yorkshire Academy had beaten title rivals Castleford. Skipper Marcus Wood scored 43 not out to help York reach 139-9 in reply to United's 189 and ensure his side took one vital bonus point. "We were aware of the result from the other game so we knew we needed a point just to make sure," said Wood. The bonus point they gained for achieving 70% of United's total, coupled with the five extra points York picked up in midweek from an appeals committee, meant they won the title by six points. Asked if York deserved the title, Wood said: "I think we played consistently well in the middle of the season. | Strength in depth is what's key to the club in the long-term | "Towards the end when the rains came and the pitches changed a bit, I think we could have applied ourselves a bit better with the bat. "Certainly the bowlers have really, really tried their hearts out and we've won some very close games." Wood is now looking towards the future and added: "We've got a few things we need to work on, we've got to get the second team into the York and District Premier League. "We've got to build our relationships with the York and District clubs, because that's our feeder base for the long-term success of this club. "Strength in depth is what's key to the club in the long-term. "It's no good just winning the titles because that's just a short-term thing, we need to make sure we've got 20-odd players at the club who are of a good standard."
