The Yorkshire Premier League title race will go down to the last day of the season after heavy rain washed out the penultimate weekend's games. All the grounds were waterlogged, including the ones hosting joint leaders Castleford and York. Even the extra day before York's Sunday game at Scarborough was not sufficient for the ground to dry out. "We got the call at 8.30 on Sunday morning telling us the ground would be unfit," said York all-rounder Nick Kay. With one game to go York are still joint top with Castleford, but if that is still the case after next Saturday's final games of the season, Castleford will take the title on the basis of having more complete wins. | It's all to play for next weekend York all-rounder Nick Kay |
There is the complication that York have a final appeal to a neutral panel on Tuesday over a washed-out game at Yorkshire Academy's Headingley ground. York claim that the groundsman made insufficient effort to get the match played, and, according to Kay, want "to be awarded the full points for the game that was available on that day." He added: "We were given three for the rained-off game, we've got a case that suggests we should have all eight." If that happens, York will go five points clear at the top, but Castleford could still win the title on the final day if they beat the Yorkshire Academy and York slip up against Sheffield United. "It's all to play for next weekend," Kay concluded.
