Away from Yorkshire since 7 May, Yorkshire's 'Southern Tour' was not a resounding success. There were two Championship defeats which left them bottom of the Championship table. On the plus side there were two Norwich Union League matches both won but sadly another costly defeat in the Benson and Hedges quarter final followed on Wednesday at Chelmsford. Yorkshire's chief executive, Chris Hassell, admits he's concerned. He told me: "Driving back from Essex on Wednesday was not at all enjoyable. You ask yourself about certain performances but everyone has bad days.
"Sometimes the weather has an effect and sometimes the toss makes a difference. Gavin Hamilton has not enjoyed the best of starts, Matthew Hoggard has been in and out even though he is an England player. "Others have had their difficulties and despite our success last year this time we have come down to earth with a bump." Back in Leeds just a few of the Yorkshire fans are starting to grumble according to Hassell. He says: "Only a handful have written or been in touch but they do share the feelings of hundreds if not thousands of our supporters. "We know they're not happy and we can just hope that we can turn it around as soon as we possible." This week on Fives Live's Yorkshire Uncovered programme I spent the day with the head coach Wayne Clark. Shocked Accessable yet focused on the match ahead, it was interesting to get that little bit closer to the dressing room. A win instead of defeat to Essex would have made a better ending to the story and the faces that were chirpy in the morning had changed to quieter, more reflective personalities as they left the ground They were clearly shocked by the heavy seven wicket loss and the coach expected their reaction to be nothing else. "Although the game is now over I hope the players are feeling it," said Clark. "As for the disapointment it's important they do hurt. It would be wrong to brush it aside. A lot of people support us and these guys are professional sportsmen.
"They must approach their performances professionally. First a complete rest and then freshen themselves up. "Feel it tonight, forget it tomorrow and concentrate on getting it right next time." I wish I could offer some reason for the bad start made by the defending Champions. I wonder if the captaincy has taken something out of Darren Lehman's game as his runs have not been as great as in previous seasons to date. Another Australian Simon Katich will touch down on 29 May to replace Lehman who leaves to play for Australia in the next fortnight. Although the idea of Darren being captain was to my thinking a good one the disruption his time away from Yorkshire due to international committments won't be helpful. Therefore it's vital that Clark together with vice-captain Richard Blakey maintain some stability to the team. With so many players out of form and a run of defeats behind them stabilty is near impossible. The next fortnight includes two Championship matches where wins are a must and a Cheltenham and Gloucester cup match away to Devon. A defeat at Exmouth doesn't bear thinking about... Yorkshire Uncovered can be heard fortnightly on Thursdays on BBC Radio Five Live's Ian Payne Show (7.00-10.00pm). Next instalment: 23 May. |
