The former Yorkshire captain, who was coaxed out of retirement a year ago to join Old Trafford, rejected Lancashire's offer of a contract extension to cover the 2003 season.

Byas, 39, said the time had come to focus on his farm duties, closing the book on a fine 17-year first-class career.

"My season with Lancashire was a great experience and one I enjoyed very much," he said.

"However, I feel that at this stage in my career I should concentrate my energies on the family business and decline Lancashire's offer of a further season.

"I would like to thank the Club for the opportunity they gave me, it was a pleasure to work with Mike Watkinson and Warren Hegg and I wish them every success in the season ahead."

Byas played 283 first-class matches, scoring 15,082 runs at an average of 35.07. He scored 29 centuries and 83 fifties.

Byas led Yorkshire to their first championship in 33 years in 2001 before his unprecedented move to Lancashire.

Lancashire Cricket Manager Watkinson said: "I am obviously disappointed that David won't be back with us next season but fully respect the decision he has made.

"David's professionalism and positive approach was a major factor in the progress we made last season and he will be greatly missed."
