So the patient is showing some signs of improvement but still requires close observation as a full recovery remains uncertain. Yorkshire's attempts to regain full health have recently included a draw in the County Championship against Hampshire, and a comfortable win against Minor Counties side Devon in the C&G Trophy third round. I know it's not much but as opening batsman Matthew Wood puts it: "A win is a win and at the moment, we will take anything."
Speaking to BBC Sport Online ahead of their current Championship match against Leicestershire at Grace Road, Wood, who himself is struggling to find form, sounded concerned but still convinced that they will soon click into gear and a run of victories is not far away. "Of course we've talked a lot about our poor start in our team meetings, but if three or four of your players aren't achieving their targets and are out of touch, you're going to struggle, myself included. Poor starts "It's our first innings in which we are really letting ourselves down and whilst none of us will make excuses, sometimes when you need a bit of luck decisions go against you and you're back to square one." What really annoys Wood is the knowledge that twice this season, he has scored centuries playing one-day cricket, but in the Championship can't get a start. It took him 45 minutes to get off the mark on day one at Grace Road before nicking a good delivery from Darren Maddy on 23.
Why three quarters of an hour to score a run? That probably had something to with Wood's pre-match feelings. "I need to get back to basics. I know, as do the rest of the lads, that it's up to us as individuals to perform as we did last year." After a couple of seasons of floundering, the 25-year-old was on song again last year. Four Championship centuries and 1,060 runs in total were enough to earn the Emley lad a Yorkshire cap. That was followed by a winter away with Rodney Marsh at the Academy in Australia but just like county teammates, Steve Kirby and Ryan Sidebottom, the benefits of the winter are yet to be seen. Personal responsibility Having been to Australia, Wood, as with the others, was told to rest. He missed Yorkshire's pre-season tour to Grenada and admits they were caught cold against Surrey in the opening match of the season. "Disruptions with players resting or away with England, are all part of the game now," he said. "We've got plenty of cover, but from one week to another, the side is almost certain to be different. You just have to get on with it.
"If there is a change in the management style under coach Wayne Clark and captain Darren Lehmann, it's that there is nobody there to hold your hand these days and tell you what to do. "The Australian way is to say you're responsible for yourself. Whilst they will encourage us and help if you ask, they can't bat, field or bowl for you, and therefore it's up to us to improve." Wood is right to say that Yorkshire didn't make a great start to last season but it was certainly better than this year. If you hold the belief, as Matthew Wood does, that one win will signal the revival, you ought to remember we are now entering June and time is not on their side. Yorkshire Uncovered can be heard fortnightly on Thursdays on BBC Radio Five Live's Ian Payne Show (7.00-10.00pm). Next instalment: 6 June. |
