Surrey future excites new chief

Michael Brown
Michael Brown has already been captured under Mackay's leadership

Surrey's new managing director Gus Mackay says there are exciting times ahead for the county.

The 41-year-old former Zimbabwe international has recently taken over newly-relegated Surrey's operation from grass roots through to the first team.

Mackay told BBC London 94.9: "I'm loving it. I'm really excited about the future and what's going on.

"The key is trying to produce our own English-qualified players and they've got to come from grass roots."

He added: "Hopefully it will be grass roots to county grounds.

"It's a really exciting role and I'm very passionate about the game. The club want to move forward in a positive way and there's a lot of opportunities out there in cricket."

We want to make sure that our signings are right to get that winning formula back, which is very important

Surrey managing director Gus Mackay
Just three days after Mackay's appointment, Surrey announced the signing of opening batsman Michael Brown from Hampshire on a two-year deal.

Mackay said: "He's the right age. He fits what we're looking for in terms of a key player and a big building block in moving us forward, so I look forward to working with him and welcoming him aboard and hopefully he will mix in and be a key part of our success going forward.

"We're going to look at all of our options and we want to make sure that our signings are right to get that winning formula back, which is very important.

"Just watch this space going forward over the next few weeks."
