Marcus Trescothick sets Somerset T20 sights high

Twenty20 is always fun - Trescothick

Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick has high hopes for his side in this season's Twenty20 competition, which begins against Sussex on Tuesday.

The clash at Hove pitches last year's finalists against each other.

Sussex comfortably won that decider at Edgbaston but Trescothick is expecting better things from Somerset in 2010.

"Hopefully we can go one step further this year. There's a lot of work for us to do but we're going out to win it," he told BBC Points West.

"The team looks in good shape. We're going pretty well in the 40-over competition, now we need to get our heads round the short format again."

Somerset enter this year's campaign with Craig Kieswetter fresh from his heroics in helping England win the World Twenty20.

And Trescothick accepts that opposition bowlers may be trying that little bit harder to remove one of the county's potential match-winners.

"I'm sure they will now they've seen him on TV. He can use that to his advantage and dominate the bowlers like he has done in the past," said Trescothick.

"He's in pretty decent nick and just needs to get a couple of scores for us."

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kieswetter made a big impression on the international stage with a man-of-the-match performance in the World Twenty20 final against Australia.

Kieswetter's temporary absence from the county scene allowed understudy Jos Buttler to make an impression and he is named on merit as a batsman in the squad for the Sussex match.

And Kieswetter believes that can only be good for the county's prospects.

"Knowing there are other players who are equally adept trying to get into the side can only be a good thing for us," he said.

"We're trying to go with a smile on our faces and have a bit of fun in practice, try to express ourselves as best we can.

"I think it's paying off as the guys are trying to hit the ball as far as they can."
