Wharf won 13 one-day caps for England after his 2004 call-up

Glamorgan's former England all-rounder Alex Wharf has quit the game after persistent knee problems.

The 34-year-old Bradford man started his career with Yorkshire in 1994, made the switch to Nottinghamshire in 1997 then moved to Wales in 2000.

He won an England one-day call-up in 2004, going on to win 13 caps in a first-class career where he scored over 5,000 runs and took over 500 wickets.

"My on-going knee problem has led me to make the tough decision," said Wharf.

"It is hard to retire from a sport that you love and has been your life for such a long period.

"I am hugely grateful to all at Glamorgan who have been so supportive during my time at the club and wish them success in the future.

"I will always look back on my cricketing career with fond memories."

Wharf's departure from the Swalec Stadium follows the recent release of fellow all-rounders Mike O'Shea and Ryan Watkins.

"It is always disappointing when long and distinguished careers prematurely come to an end through injury," said Glamorgan director of cricket Matthew Maynard.

"But Alex can be very proud of all that he has achieved particularly here at Glamorgan where he has been a consistent player over the last 10 years."
