COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Swalec Stadium: Glamorgan 166 & 269-3 dec drew with Derbyshire 276 & 123-5 Glamorgan 6pts, Derbys 7pts Match scorecard
Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple was unable to take his side up |
Glamorgan were denied promotion after they could only draw with Derbyshire at Cardiff to miss out on a return to the County Championship top flight. Worcestershire's successful chase of 301 against Sussex ensured that only a win would take the Welsh side up. After dismissing Derbyshire for 276, Glamorgan were then served up some declaration bowling to reach 269-3 and set the visitors 160 to win. But they were unable to force the victory, Derbyshire closing on 123-5. Glamorgan arrived on the final day with the game heading for a tame draw, but when Sussex declared at New Road to set up a chase for Worcestershire, a deal was done to set up a finish. | 606: DEBATE |
With the Welsh side 92-0 in their second innings, they were fed 117 runs in only 17.2 overs before they declared. Gareth Rees helped himself to an unbeaten 106, while Derbyshire wicketkeeper Tom Poynton bowled eight overs, taking 2-96. The hosts had a minimum of 38 overs to take the 10 wickets that would guarantee promotion and they managed to reduce Derbyshire to 63-5 in the 22nd. But an unbroken sixth-wicket stand between Robin Peterson (34) and Dan Redfern (29) frustrated the Welsh and sent Worcestershire up.
