COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Northampton Surrey 530 beat Northants 209 & 226 by an innings and 95 runs (Surrey 21pts, Northants 3pts)
Former England spinner Schofield as enjoyed a new lease of lift at Surrey |
Surrey secured a first Championship win since 2007 as Chris Schofield picked up his second five-wicket haul of the season at Northampton. Northants resumed the final day on 189-7 in their second innings, needing another 132 to make Surrey bat again. But they were only able to add 37 more runs to be dismissed for 226 as spinner Schofield claimed two of the last three wickets to finish with figures of 5-40. Murtaza Hussain took the last wicket to seal victory by an innings and 95 runs. It took Surrey less than 30 minutes to complete their emphatic victory, but it might have been over sooner had Schofield not been unlucky to have three big lbw appeals turned down in his opening over. He did not have to wait long for his fourth wicket of the innings, though, trapping David Lucas in front. | 606: DEBATE |
Johannes Van der Wath tried to play aggressively batting with the tail, hitting both Hussain and Schofield for six in successive overs. But Schofield eventually lured him into a false shot and Usman Afzaal took a comfortable catch on the mid-wicket boundary. David Wigley was last out when he misread a delivery from Hussain and lobbed the ball to Andre Nel at mid-off. It secured Surrey's first victory in four-day cricket since the final game of the 2007 season when their 24-run win over Lancashire at The Oval stopped their visitors winning the title.
