 Left-hander Usman Afzaal enjoyed a good day's work |
Usman Afzaal was unbeaten on 156 as Surrey secured a 219-run lead over Northants at stumps on day two. The former Northants batsman hit 22 fours and one six off 352 balls and was 12 short of his career-best as Surrey moved from 113-4 to 428-7. Australian Ryan Harris smashed 14 fours and two sixes in his 94 despite needing a runner because of a knee injury. David Lucas dismissed Jonathan Batty and Chris Schofield but Monty Panesar failed to take a wicket in 25 overs. Afzaal, who resumed on 22, was in control from the start and brought up the century partnership with Batty before lunch by smashing Panesar over long on for six. Lucas made the day's first breakthrough with the last ball before the break when he forced Batty to edge to wicket keeper David Murphy for 48. Surrey lost Schofield to Lucas early after lunch, but then Harris took control. Afzaal got bogged down in the nineties, but finally brought up his century with a single. Harris reached his half-century shortly after tea from 58 balls, but later tried one shot too many, falling leg before to Wigley six runs short of a ton. Murtaza Hussain smashed three fours on the way to an unbeaten 17 while Afzaal eased past the 150 mark.
