| Saturday, 31 August, 2002, 18:00 GMT 19:00 UK Elliott modest in triumph ![]() Elliott used a variety of shots in his ton Man-of-the-match Matthew Elliott praised colleague Anthony McGrath after the pair saw Yorkshire to their first win in a Lord's final for 15 years. The Victorian hammered the first century by an overseas player in the end-of-season knockout since Viv Richards in 1979. And afterwards, he played down his own efforts which saw him craft a match-winning knock of 128 not out off 125 balls which included 13 boundaries. Elliott said: "Somerset bowled very well early on, particularly Richard Johnson but we just sort of hung in there. "Anthony came in and played a little gem and saw us over the line. "We were trying to work out who was going to go and who was going to anchor the innings. "In the end we just decided we would both go." McGrath came in with the ball beginning to turn for the spinners and reverse-swing for the seamers. More than 100 runs were required at slightly more than six an over, but McGrath, who had also bowled well, kept his head well. He was also able to sit back and admire Elliott for much of the time. The Australian's placement and shot selection were of the very highest order. Winning captain Richard Blakey said: "It's a fantastic feeling. "Obviously Darren Lehmann would have loved to have been there but it's been an absolute honour to be here." Blakey had taken the captaincy reins after Lehmann was ushered into Australia's one-day squad for an ongoing tournament in Kenya. He said Elliott had been a "fantastic replacement" for Lehmann. |
