Devon Smith set the tone by smashing 65 off just 86 balls at the start of the day, while Chris Gayle hit two sixes and 10 fours in reaching 75. The pair put on 138 for the first wicket, but the innings suffered something of a collapse as Matt Bulbeck came good in his second spell and the score soon read 181 for four. Lendl Simmons, the 17-year-old prodigy from Trinidad, then hammered 81 off 108 balls to ensure a decent total for the tourists, while Bulbeck eventually finished with four for 47. Another teenager, Neil Edwards, playing his first game for Somerset, opened the batting with Matthew Wood in the home side's reply. Cornishman Edwards confidently moved to 29 not out at stumps, as have and Wood recorded an unbeaten opening stand of 60. |
