Fairbrother's work in vain
Neil Fairbrother
Fairbrother scored his 47th first-class century
Tour match, Liverpool, day two of four
West Indies A 369 & 38-0 v Lancashire 279

Neil Fairbrother crashed a century at Aigburth, but his young Lancashire team-mates failed to back up the left-hander as they conceded a 90-run first innings deficit to West Indies A.

Fairbrother was run out shortly after reaching his 47th first-class ton off 121 balls, including 17 boundaries on the small Liverpool ground.

And stand-in captain Graham Lloyd, who had joined the veteran in a fourth wicket stand of 158, was out in similar fashion for 68 with the scoreboard still stuck on 232.

No other batsman managed to top David Byas' 14.

The pair had picked Lancashire out of the early mire of 74 for three, and after their dismissals the last five wickets fell for the addition of 47 more, Reon King and Sulieman Benn sharing two each.

Opener Darren Powell, who made his Test debut last month, made the early inroads, having Mark Currie bowled for two and taking a return catch off Alec Swann for 14.

Earlier, batsman Devon Smith's first innings was finally ended for 181, caught off Mike Smethurst after five and a half hours, as the tourists finished on 369 all out.

Openers Daren Ganga and Chris Gayle played patiently through the final 10 overs of the day to reach 38 without loss.
