Third Test, Kandy (day one, stumps): West Indies 134-2 (40 overs) v Sri Lanka Full match scorecard
Smith (left) and Bravo (right) had their progress halted by the weather |
Half-centuries from Darren Bravo (63) and Devon Smith (55) helped the West Indies to 134-2 on a rain-affected opening day against Sri Lanka in Kandy. After a two-hour delay Chris Gayle, who made 333 in the second Test, was out for a golden duck to debutant Suranga Lakmal's first ball in Test cricket. Bad lights shortened the afternoon as Bravo and Smith took the score to 115 before Ajantha Mendis snared Smith. Shivnarine Chanderpaul then came to the crease to see out the rest of the day. Only 15 overs were possible before lunch because of the bad weather but the visitors did their best to fight back after their disastrous start. | 606: DEBATE |
Sri Lanka's Angelo Matthews was on the end of some heavy punishment either side of the lunch interval as the West Indies tried to make the most of their opportunities to bat. Further rain led to an early tea with the score on 69-1, before Bravo reached the third 50 of his Test career with back-to-back boundaries off Dilhara Fernando shortly after play resumed. Smith reached his half-century after surviving a scare when he was dropped by Thilan Samaraweera off the bowling of Fernando. Bravo survived a referral when he was given not out to a caught behind, but in the next over Sri Lanka finally had some joy as Smith was out lbw to Ajantha Mendis. Fernando was out of luck again as third slip Mahela Jayawardene dropped Bravo, shortly before the close.
