Second Test, Colombo (day three, close): Sri Lanka 387-9dec v West Indies 165-5 Match scorecard Dilshan has 18 wickets from 64 Test matches bowling his off-spin
Two wickets in three deliveries from Tillakaratne Dilshan gave Sri Lanka the advantage after day three of the second Test against West Indies in Colombo. The part-time off-spinner snared the key wicket of Darren Bravo, who fell 20 runs short of a maiden Test century. And Dilshan removed Brendan Nash (29) moments later to leave the tourists perilously placed at 165-5 at stumps. Kemar Roach was West Indies' star performer with the ball, taking 5-100 as Sri Lanka declared on 387-9. Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed for 150, adding a further 15 runs to his overnight total. The home captain had been in complete control throughout his innings before edging an expansive cover drive off opposite number Darren Sammy into the hands of Chris Gayle at first slip. Wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene (34) and Rangana Herath (24 not out) pushed Sri Lanka towards the 400-mark, but Sangakkara opted to declare when Ajantha Mendis was cleaned up 20 minutes before lunch by Roach, who earned his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket in the process. | 606: DEBATE |
And the declaration paid immediate dividends when opener Adrian Barath was trapped lbw by Nuwan Kulasekara just before the interval. The second session saw Gayle, triple centurion from the first Test, fall for 30 when he pulled a short ball from debutant fast bowler Suranga Lakmal into the hands of Angelo Mathews at deep square leg. Fellow left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul followed soon after with the score at 77-3 but Bravo, playing in only his second Test, steadied the innings alongside the obdurate Brendan Nash. The duo put on 83, with Bravo in particular playing with freedom, launching four sixes along with five boundaries before their promising partnership was severed by Dilshan. The off-spinner trapped Nash lbw for 29 before Bravo was brilliantly caught by Herath at full stretch behind point following a miscued heave over the infield. "Dilshan's got that little magic touch, when he comes on he just manages to do something," said Sangakkara.
