West Indies suffered a blow to their hopes of winning the first Test in Sri Lanka when most of the third day's play in Galle was lost to rain.

They succeeded in dismissing home captain Kumar Sangakkara for 73.

Kemar Roach and Dwayne Bravo picked up a wicket each as West Indies bowled well in overcast conditions.

But Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten with a solid 51 as Sri Lanka reached 165-3 at the close in reply to the tourists' total of 580-9 declared.

The first two days were dominated by West Indies opener Chris Gayle, who amassed a career-best 333 - the second triple century of his Test career.

Sri Lanka resumed on 54-1 and Roach dismissed opener Tharanga Paranavitana for 10 in the day's third over with a delivery which cut in sharply and uprooted the batsman's off-stump.

Sangakkara drove debutant paceman Andre Russell through the covers and then edged past slips for two fours in an over as he completed his half century off just 45 balls with the help of nine boundaries.

He put on 71 with Jayawardene before being bowled by an inswinging yorker from Bravo.

Former skipper Jayawardene reached his 37th Test half-century when flicking Roach through mid-wicket for a four after lunch. But only 4.1 overs were possible before bad light forced the players from the field, and after rain set in the umpires called a halt two hours later.
