First Test, Galle (day four, close): West Indies 580-9 v Sri Lanka 378 & 89-0 Match scorecard
Shillingford will be after more Sri Lanka wickets early on day five |
Sri Lanka were forced to follow on by a determined West Indies before the openers dug in to leave a draw the likeliest result in the first Test. From an overnight 165-3, Sri Lanka got to 378-9, needing three more runs to avoid following on, when Shane Shillingford took the last wicket. The off-spinner finished with 4-123 from 33.2 overs in his fourth Test. Tharanga Paranavitana and Tillakaratne Dilshan then steered the hosts to 89-0, 113 runs behind with one day to go. The players came off 22 overs early because of rain in Galle. Though Sri Lanka's openers coped well second time around on a flat wicket against a tiring Windies attack, up until it had once again been a very encouraging day for the unheralded tourists. The situation looked particularly then bleak for Sri Lanka at lunch, which they reached on 264-6, having scored 99 runs for the loss of Mahela Jayawardene (59), Thilan Samaraweera (52) and Angelo Mathews (27). | 606: DEBATE |
Of that trio, Jayawardene played loosely at Kemar Roach, edging behind, Samaraweera was unluckily run out off via Dwayne Bravo's boot and Mathews played Shillingford lazily, straight to backward short-leg. Prasanna Jayawardene (58) and Dammika Prasad (47) restored some equilibrium with an entertaining 72-run stand in 73 balls for the eighth wicket. Prasad finally became carried away by his aggression and was caught by Andre Russell in the deep off Shillingford, and the rest of the innings unravelled quickly. Two Tests follow, in Colombo and Kandy.
