Celebrations after Jersey beat the USA in World League 5 in 2008 |
Jersey's cricketers could soon be on a path to qualify for the finals of the ICC World Twenty20 event. The ICC has designed a new-look tournament to include 10 qualifiers from regional Twenty20 events. The intention is to give all 94 Associate and Affiliate Members, which include Jersey, an opportunity towards qualifying for those finals. It means Jersey could emulate the achievement of Afghanistan, who reached this year's finals in the West Indies. ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: "This is an extremely exciting, strategic and encouraging development for the future of our great sport. "It represents a clear sign of our ongoing commitment to growing the game beyond its traditional boundaries and ensuring that each of our members has the opportunity to develop and become the best they can be." Jersey's director of cricket, Chris Minty, says the island team, already in European Division One in the 50-over version, would probably be up against similar sides in a European Twenty20 qualification league. "The full details are not available yet, but I suspect it will be those sort of teams that we would have to beat to qualify," he said
