Guernsey struggle on Sussex tour

Cricket

Guernsey's cricket team were well beaten in both of their matches on their tour of Sussex.

On Friday they went down to the Sussex Academy by 78 runs at Hove. The home team managed 299-4 from their 50 overs, with Matt Minchin 151 not out.

In reply Guernsey were all out for 221 as GH Smit top scored with 78.

On Sunday the island side lost by 94 runs to a Sussex Premier League XI at Stirlands in Chichester. Guernsey could only manage 181 all out in 39.5 overs.

Captain Stuart le Prevost top scored with 34.

Guernsey had been set a daunting target after the home team scored 275- 8 in 45 overs.

Again our spinners pegged them back well when they looked like making 320 plus
Dave Piesing
Guernsey Cricket Board chairman

Friday's defeat at Hove came a day after Guernsey had lost to Kenya by 72 runs, as the African side continued to prepare for the Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers.

"The Sussex Academy side was stronger than Kenya," said Guernsey Cricket Board chairman Dave Piesing.

"They were 180 for 1 after 30 overs, and at that stage they looked like making 330 to 340, but were pegged back by Guernsey's spinners."

Piesing said Guernsey's slow bowlers had also performed well against the Sussex Premier League XI.

"Their score was about par on a small ground with an excellent batting wicket.

"Again our spinners pegged them back well when they looked like making 320 plus," said Piesing.

"Unfortunately (it was) an off-day for our batsmen, who managed to find ways to get themselves out."

Guernsey's cricketers must now prepare for the inter-insular with Jersey at Grainville on Saturday 9 August.
