Devon forced to settle for draw

Cricket

Devon's chances of beating leaders Cheshire fizzled out after their hosts left them with too much to do.

Ben Spendlove hit 70 for Cheshire as they finished on 266-6 declared, leaving Devon needing an improbable 317 to win in less than a day.

Despite captain Bobby Dawson's 55 not out Devon were never going to reach the target and the two sides called it a day with the visitors on 150-3.

Devon are now third from bottom in the Minor Counties Western Division table.

Their next match is scheduled to be at Wiltshire starting on Sunday 3 August and finishes a day before their Minor Counties Cricket Association Trophy final at Lord's.

Cheshire remain five points clear at the top of the table.
