Joyce's big knock helped Ireland recover from early setbacks |
Middlesex star Ed Joyce hit a century to help Ireland claim a 97-run win over Bermuda on the opening day of the ICC Trophy at Stormont. Joyce's knock of 103 was supported by 93 from Eoin Morgan as Ireland posted an impressive total of 315 for 8.
Bermuda never threatened the Irish total despite Oliver Pitcher's 40 and Janeiro Tucker's unbeaten 53.
Also in Group A, the United Arab Emirates defeated USA while Denmark edged out Uganda.
In Belfast, Joyce came to the crease at 55 for two and departed with Ireland at 296 for six and the job already done.
He and the impressive Morgan put on a 170-run partnership for the fourth wicket, with the 18-year-old Middlesex apprentice scoring a more adventurous 93, the last 40 coming with a rapid-fire long handle.
Joyce reaped the reward of a studious knock with his ton coming in 89 balls including 10 fours and two sixes.
In the Bermudian innings, Andrew White broke a useful opening partnership when he ran out Delyone Borde on 48 and the slow accurate spin of Kyle McCallan and White kept runs at a premium.
Bermuda managed to bat out their 50 overs but their total of 218 for 6 was 97 runs short of Ireland's imposing total.
At Downpatrick, the United Arab Emirates were bowled out for 200 in the 40th over with Khurah Khan top-scoring with 79.
However, Ahmed Nadeem ripped through the US innings with figures of 5 for 28 as the Americans were skittled out for 141 after 40.5 overs.
Denmark's modest total of 196 for 8 was still enough to see off Uganda by 28 runs.
Danish left-arm seamer Thomas Hansen claimed impressive bowling figures of 6 for 31 from his 10 overs.
