Jacques Kallis described passing former team-mate Gary Kirsten's South African career marks for Test runs and centuries as "a great honour". His unbeaten 127 against West Indies was his 22nd Test ton, and took him to 7,317 runs in his 93rd Test.
"I'm sad in a way because he did a lot for South African cricket and deserved those records," said Kallis after day two in Antigua.
"But I'm also proud that I could go past someone as great as Gary."
At the other end, Ashwell Prince was celebrating just his second Test ton as the duo took South Africa to 525-4 at stumps.
"The pitch was good," said the left-hander, who shared in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 230.
"I struggled a bit at the start but I started hitting it sweeter the longer I stayed in."
Kallis hinted at a declaration somewhere around the 600 mark, with a plan to bowl the home side out twice.
"We wanted to bat the whole day," he explained.
"If we can bat a bit longer, score quite quickly and stick them in who knows what could happen?
"It was a pretty similar situation in the last Test, where we managed to bowl them out, so hopefully we can do the same again."
