Younis Khan said his second-ball duck in Pakistan's defeat a week ago was the inspiration behind his marathon 267 in the final Test against India. Younis' innings - the sixth highest Test score by a Pakistani - helped the tourists amass 570 in Bangalore.
He said: "I was very angry with myself after failing in the second innings at Calcutta. I wanted to make amends.
"Failures make you more responsible. Our defeat made me realise that I have a duty to perform as a senior player."
The 27-year-old vice-captain says he now feels comfortable batting at number three - but insists he should not have been thrown in there early in his Test career.
"I was treated unfairly when I broke into Test cricket as a young player," he explained.
"In the early Tests against the West Indies pace bowlers Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose, I was sent in high in the batting order.
"Being a newcomer, I should have been sent lower down the order and allowed to get accustomed to the atmosphere."
Younis now wants Pakistan to push for victory in the remaining three days - and he believes the pitch is far from docile.
"We need to capitalise on our big score and we can win this Test if we exploit the cracks in the pitch, which could be very helpful to our spinners." he added.
Harbhajan Singh's return of 6-152 was the only real positive for India on a second successive day of toil.
The off-spinner's "doosra" delivery - which turns away from right-handed batsmen instead of coming in like a normal off-break - once again came under the microscope in Calcutta.
It led to him being reported for having a suspect bowling action by match referee Chris Broad.
But he said: "I played without any pressure and am happy that I performed well. The Indian board is there to take care of the matter.
"I was not worried and also bowled the doosra during this innings because I am not banned from bowling this delivery.
"Questions over my bowling action were raised before, but such things happen in cricket.
"The pitch was not offering any spin, but I extracted some bounce after tea and got two wickets."
