A week ago, Anil Kumble's leg spin won the Calcutta Test for India.

But his efforts with the bat were not quite good enough to save the day for his side in Bangalore, running out of partners with six overs remaining as Pakistan wrapped up a superb victory.

With two sessions to go, the match looked destined for a draw.

All the predictions in the morning newspapers of a close and exciting finish seemed wide of the mark with India 102-1 at lunchtime, and Pakistan's sole success the result of a run out.

But four wickets fell in the afternoon and Pakistan seized a grip on the match they never relaxed.

Their bowlers had been criticised before the series, but chose the last day of the series to make their mark.

Danish Kaneria snapped up the last two wickets to finish with a remarkable 19 in the three matches.

He was expected to play a leading role, but behind a seam attack which was often disappointing, his performance was outstanding.

India will be regretting their missed chances in the drawn Test in Mohali

Younis Khan took Pakistan's honours with the bat. Two big centuries lifted his run tally for the series past the 500 mark and now, after a period of uncertainty about his place, he must be safe in the number three role.

Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, meanwhile, will be more than content with his big superb century in the first innings of his 100th Test match.

The form of his opposite number, Sourav Ganguly, provided a stark contrast.

His aggregate for the series was just 48, and he was twice booed while batting in Bangalore and against during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Virender Sehwag

Sachin Tendulkar was consistent, without ever threatening one of his really big innings.

But even in defeat, he passed Sunil Gavaskar's run tally to become the highest Test scorer for India, and now lies third overall behind Allan Border and Steve Waugh.

Virender Sehwag, with 544 runs, deserved his Man of the Series title, and he and Rahul Dravid, who once again missed out on his home ground in Bangalore, appear to have taken the side's batting mantle from Tendulkar.

Anil Kumble took India's bowling honours with 17 wickets, but Lakshmipathy Balaji and Irfan Pathan, in spurts, were not too far behind.

So a drawn series, as it was when Pakistan last visited for Test matches six years ago.

But India will be regretting their missed chances in the drawn Test in Mohali after being in charge for the first four days.
