First Test, St Lucia, day four (stumps):
West Indies 352 v Bangladesh 416 and 94-6 Gayle's 141 held the West Indies' innings together |
Bangladesh's chances of claiming a draw in the first Test against West Indies were looking doubtful after they slumped to 94-6 on the fourth day.
They now lead the West Indies by 158 runs with four wickets remaining going into the final day's play.
Bangladesh had bowled West Indies out for 352 after they had resumed on 262-5, with Chris Gayle out for 141.
But the minnows struggled in their second innings after part-time bowler Ramnaresh Sarwan took 3-22.
Rain delayed the start of the fourth day but when it resumed it was the home side who struggled, losing their last five wickets for 90 runs.
Gayle hit his fifth Test ton and wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs was unbeaten on 46.
Mushfiqur Rahman was the star with the ball, taking 4-65 and Mohammad Rafique ended with 3-90 as Bangladesh took a 64-run lead into the second innings.
But they got off to a torrid start when opener Hannan Sarkar was bowled by Fidel Edwards for nine and Javed Omar followed him back to the pavilion having scored just seven to leave Bangladesh on 21-2.
Sarwan then took three wickets to increase their woes although at the end of play, Rajin Saleh was unbeaten on 34 and Khaled Mashud on eight not out.
Bangladesh have never won a Test match and have only drawn one game in four years of Test cricket.
