First Test, St Lucia, day three (close):
West Indies 262-5 v Bangladesh 416 Gayle's 110 not out restored some lost Windies pride |
An unbeaten century from Chris Gayle restored West Indies to 262-5 after Bangladesh amassed a record score of 416 in the first Test.
The home side lost an early wicket when Devon Smith was run out for nought with just two runs on the board.
But Gayle (110 not out) took the attack to the visitors with Ramnaresh Sarwan (40), Brian Lara (53) and Dwayne Smith (40) chipping in.
Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafique took two wickets for Bangladesh.
After Bangladesh resumed the day on 406-9, Pedro Collins forced Rafique to edge onto his stumps for 111 in the fourth over of the day.
The left-armer completed figures of 4-83, while Tareq Aziz finished six not out off 47 balls..
The Tigers' previous best total was 400, made against India in their inaugural Test against India in 2000.
Gayle rode a wave of fortune, being dropped on 24, 28 and 47 to underline the poor catching of the visitors, who dropped six catches in all.
After Smith failed to beat Faisal Hossain's throw from backward, Gayle and Sarwan batted with aplomb to take West Indies to 68-1 at lunch.
The wickets of Sarwan, caught off a top-edge at deep backward square leg, and Lara, who edged Mushfiqur Rahman behind, helped to bring Bangladesh back again.
Gayle was almost a passenger in a stand of 73 for the third wicket with his captain, who was just beginning to get into the swing of things, when he top-edged a late cut.
Bangladesh continued to apply the pressure and were rewarded with the wickets of Chanderpaul and Dwayne Smith, both off Rafique.
Gayle was the one constant in a stay already over six hours, with 14 boundaries from 246 balls.
