Commonwealth Games 2010: Guernsey athletes miss opener

More than half of Guernsey's athletes at the Commonwealth Games are expected to miss the opening ceremony on Sunday.

The games will officially open at 1430 BST and more than 7,000 artists are expected to take part in a special show at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.

Athletes are expected to stay for the entire three-hour ceremony.

But Guernsey competitors who start on Monday have been advised not to attend so they are prepared and rested for competition.

At least 24 of the 42 athletes will be competing with events schedule for day one in swimming, badminton, bowls, squash, table tennis and tennis.
