Scott Lawton lost to Amir Kahn in 2007 |
Stoke boxer Scott Lawton says he has not given up on having another shot at the British super-featherweight title. Lawton, 34, takes on British champion Gary Sykes in the first round of Saturday's Prizefighter tournament. He told BBC Radio Stoke:"If I win the tournament then hopefully I can get a shot at the British title. "I start with the British champion but he isn't better than the kids I've been in with, he's no Amir Khan, John Thaxton or John Murray." Lawton failed to clinch the European super-featherweight crown after losing out to Leva Kirakosyan last May. Sykes, 26, has been British champion since March and has won all of his 16 professional fights. The Prizefighter contest held at York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, 20 November will see eight top super-featherweights battle for the £32,000 jackpot. | I don't want to go out at the first round and pick up £4000, I'm greedy. |
And Lawton makes no apologies that he has entered the competition for the money. "I've got a family to support and the £32,000 is a lot of money. I don't want to go out at the first round and pick up £4000, I'm greedy." Also in the line-up are former world champions Choi Tseveenpurev and Derry Matthews, who was stopped in six rounds by Lawton at Fenton Manor in November 2009. Lawton will need to win all three of his three-round fights on the night if he is to be successful and challenge for the British title.
