Stoke's Scott Lawton won the English lightweight title in December 2008
Stoke boxer Scott Lawton says a British lightweight title fight against the unbeaten John Murray could happen.
The English lightweight champion, 32, says the bout against Manchester-based Murray is close to being arranged.
"I've been nominated to the board to be made mandatory challenger for it," so fingers crossed it will be happening," Lawton told BBC Radio Stoke.
"John's a proper fighter, he doesn't want to dodge anyone, and it's a fight I think we can make pretty easily."
Lawton beat Martin Gethin in December 2008 to win the English title before successfully defending it against Johnny Greaves in his home town of Stoke at the Fenton Manor Sports Complex a month later.
If the fight against Manchester-based Murray does go ahead, Lawton is confident he can win the British title for the first time.
"He fights a lot like Martin Gethin and I dealt with him fairly comfortably," said Lawton. "He suited the way I box and I think John will suit the way I box as well."
Lawton has fought for the British title once before, losing to Jon Thaxton in Norwich in March 2007.
