Lockett is joining one of Wales' most successful teams |
WBU middleweight champion Gary Lockett has joined trainer Enzo Calzaghe's highly successful stable in Newbridge. The Cwmbran man, 30, has had an amicable split with Manchester-based trainer Brian Hughes.
"I've known I needed change and having more family time was important," Lockett told the South Wales Argus.
Lockett is set to make his second title defence on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe v Peter Manfredo Jr at the Millennium Stadium on 7 April.
He is still seeking an opponent, following the withdrawal of Darren McDermott.
 | I am enjoying the increased competition and variety in sparring |
Lockett, whose record stands at 29-1 (19 KOs), joins the likes of Joe Calzaghe, Enzo Maccarinelli, Bradley Pryce, Gavin Rees, Nathan Cleverly and Kerry Hope in Enzo Calzaghe's camp.
"I am starting to find my feet in the gym," said Lockett.
"The camaraderie between the guys is excellent, I already knew them all anyway and I am enjoying the increased competition and variety in sparring.
"Enzo Calzaghe is an incredibly tough task master, but I relish that aspect of his training.
"I have always prided myself on putting in the hard yards and getting my head down and working flat out."
