 Charlie Pearson's retirement prompted Maccarinelli's move |
WBU cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli has named Enzo Calzaghe as his new trainer. Charlie Pearson, the Swansea fighter's coach of seven years, retired recently, prompting Maccarinelli's move to Calzaghe's Newbridge gym.
Calzaghe has taken his son Joe to the WBO and IBF super middleweight titles, and Maccarinelli feels he will benefit.
"There's a great vibe at Enzo's stable and he trains a style I like," Maccarinelli told the Wales on Sunday.
 | Enzo (Calzaghe) works a lot on speed and that's an area I've neglected over the last few years |
"He's an attack-minded trainer and I'm an attack-minded fighter.
"Enzo works a lot on speed and that's an area I've neglected over the last few years as I've concentrated on power and single shots.
"We're working on flurries and combinations, it's a fresh approach I'm revelling in. He's a bit of a slave driver, to be honest!
"It's also a new environment. Obviously Joe trains there, but there's a load of other promising lads like Gavin Rees and Bradley Pryce.
"As you can imagine, the competition is as good as the banter!
"There hasn't been any sparring with Joe yet, but that will come if he needs to train for a tall fighter."
