Scott Gammer was always in control of the fight |
British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer saw off the challenge of Micky Steeds to retain his title on points. The undefeated Pembroke man, 29, was always in control at the Afan Lido, Port Talbot, and produced a controlled display over the 12 rounds on Friday.
Steeds, still very inexperienced, showed guts but ultimately did not have the class to hurt Gammer.
Gammer said: "That was the first time I've gone 12 rounds, but I knew everything was going nice."
All three judges made Gammer the clear winner on their scorecards.
One gave him the fight 120-108, while the other two both scored it 118-110.
Steeds was given little chance before the fight but the inexperienced east Londoner refused to be intimidated at the start.
The more compact Gammer was landing more scoring punches but Steeds, wearing shin-length white silk shorts, tried to get his jab working.
Steeds was looking to survive the opening rounds and do his work later on.
Gammer upped the tempo in the fifth round, firing in a succession of tough body shots and hurting Steeds with a fierce left to the chin.
Gammer's superior skills came more and more to the fore as the fight moved into the seventh round.
When Steeds did land, his punches lacked impact and Gammer was able to continue his calculated assault.
In the final rounds Gammer stamped his authority over the tiring challenger, and by the end was a convincing winner.
The Isle of Dogs' Steeds, 23, was a replacement for Danny Williams, who pulled out so he could observe Ramadan.
