Sayers won an eighth consecutive title in Birmingham last week |
Javelin thrower Goldie Sayers has been ruled out of the European Championships later this month with a hip injury. Britain's Olympic finalist picked up the injury at last weekend's National Championships and European Trials. Sayers, who won an eighth consecutive title in Birmingham, said: "I am absolutely gutted to be missing out. "It was a completely freak injury that I sustained on my second throw in Birmingham," said Sayers, who vowed to be back for the Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old from Cambridgeshire said: "Training had been going so well until this point and I really thought I could challenge for a medal at the Europeans in Barcelona. "But I can't dwell on what has happened, instead I will continue training and working whilst I'm in rehab with the aim of coming back for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October." Sayers has been hampered by injuries for the past 12 months. She recovered from a partial stress fracture of the back to compete in the World Championships in Berlin but failed to reach the final.
