Sayers ready to step up recovery

Goldie Sayers is all smiles after qualifying for the javelin final

Javelin thrower Goldie Sayers is set to step up her recovery from a back stress fracture at the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace this weekend.

The 27-year-old from Ely, Cambridgeshire, came first at the UK Championships using a shorter run-up.

She told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I've just got to take the handbrake off at the weekend.

"If I can get somewhere around 60m I'll be happy and feel like I'm on course for the World Champs."

Sayers has had a tough 12 months after narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal in Beijing last summer and her recent struggle with injury has hampered her season.

The Grand Prix at Crystal Palace this weekend will act as a guide for how well she can expect to perform at the World Championships in Berlin in August.

"A top-eight finish would be realistic at the moment," she said. "But it's a case of getting through qualifying first which is always quite tricky.

"I just want to throw well and if I do that then that will be a decent performance."

Sayers is the current UK women's javelin record holder with a throw of 65.05 metres.
