Cambridge United have revealed talks over the return of sacked manager Gary Brabin have collapsed.
Brabin told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that chairman George Rolls had asked him to return to his role as U's boss.
U's press officer Will Jones said: "The possibility was explored of Gary maybe coming back. That's a non-starter due to the problems over Gary's departure."
Rolls was unavailable for comment because he is interviewing for the vacant manager's job.
The club say the role will not be filled for at least another week.
Brabin was sacked a week ago because of differing opinions on the playing budget.
He had led Cambridge to the Blue Square Premier play-off final in his first season in charge and was named the league's manager of the year.
