CIAC women win to avoid the drop

Athletics

The Channel Islands Athletics Club women's team have won in the last round of the UK Athletics League, to stave off relegation from Division Four.

A strong performance from the 4x400m relay squad in the final race, gave the CIAC team enough points to claim first place in the match at Gateshead.

Claire Forbes was also on form in the 3000m, winning by almost 10 seconds and Kylie Robilliard won the 100m hurdles.

The victory means that the women finish fifth in the league, with 12.5 points.

CIAC coach Andrew Winnie said having a full strength team back after the Island Games was a crucial factor.

"Congratulations must go to the women who really performed exceptionally well and proved that they deserve to stay in their current division next season," Winnie said.

The CIAC men's team also put in a good showing at their penultimate British Athletics League (BAL) Division Four match at Mayesbrook Park, in Barking.

The team finished second in the match to give themselves a two point lead over City of Edinburgh AC, who are currently at the foot of the table.
